Feldspar | Minerals Education Coalition

Feldspar. Feldspar is the name given to a group of minerals distinguished by the presence of alumina and silica (SiO 2) in their chemistry. This group includes aluminum silicates of soda, potassium, or lime. It is the single most abundant mineral group on Earth.

Feldspar - Wikipedia

Feldspar had been discarded in the process of mining mica until William Dibbell sent a premium quality product to the Ohio company Golding and Sons around 1910. [32] In earth sciences and archaeology, feldspars are used for potassium-argon dating , argon-argon dating , and luminescence dating .

Potassium - Wikipedia

Orthoclase (potassium feldspar) is a common rock-forming mineral. Granite for example contains 5% potassium, which is well above the average in the Earth's crust. Sylvite (KCl), carnallite (KCl·MgCl 2 ·6(H 2 O)), kainite (MgSO 4 ·KCl·3H 2 O) and langbeinite (MgSO 4 ·K 2 SO 4) are the minerals found in large evaporite deposits worldwide.

Alkali feldspar - feldspar minerals poor in calcium, and mostly rich in potassium. At high temperature the alkali feldspars form a series from sanidine to high albite ; the series is incomplete at low temperature.

Amazonite: A bluish-green gem mineral. A microcline feldspar

What is Amazonite? Amazonite is a trade name used for a green to bluish green to greenish blue gem material that is made into cabochons, beads, and tumbled stones. It is a color variety of microcline, a potassium-rich member of the feldspar mineral group.Amazonite has a chemical composition of KAlSi 3 O 8 and its green color is thought to be caused by trace amounts of lead.

What Is Granite And How Is It Formed?

Fractional crystallisation serves to reduce a melt in iron, magnesium, titanium, calcium and sodium, and enrich the melt in potassium and silicon – alkali feldspar (rich in potassium) and quartz (SiO2), are two of the defining constituents of granite.
